物理性质
无色透明液体,有强烈芳香气味。 不溶于水,溶于乙醇和。
室温下可溶解苄醇、糠醇、2-氯乙醇、乙二醇一乙酸酯、糠醛、二甲基甲酰胺和乙腈。对金属无腐蚀性。
化学性质
1.经铬酸氧化成间苯二甲酸。间二甲苯与发烟硝酸发生硝化反应,生成二硝基二。与硫酸发生磺化反应;在三氯化铝催化作用下能发生烷基化反应。
2.稳定性:稳定。
3.禁配物:强氧化剂、酸类、卤素等。
4.聚合危害:不聚合。

用于医药、香料和染料中间体原料及彩色电影油溶性成色剂。还用作制造间苯二甲酸的原料。但和邻、对位的异构体相比,需要量较少,因此,常将其通过异构化转变成其他异构体。
用于生产间苯二甲酸、间甲酸、间苯二甲腈等。
